THE PAINTER OF SIGNS (SPECIALISTS 2005-6) :

This  year we are studying 'The painter of Signs' by RK Narayan. It's an opportunity to learn more about the Indian Culture and to read an author who is less well-known to the French public. The class of 'Anglais de specialité', English specialists, is doing research into various background topics about India in groups. They will give their talks in January.
They will be using various sources to do their research, including the net.So far I have found several web-sites about Narayan but not much about this book.I shall be looking out for teachers' forums to see if we can exchange ideas and perhaps add a forum here later.
The students seem less daunted by the book this year as it isn't too long, but there are many cultural references which they will come to understand as we go along. We shall see the film 'Bend it like Beckham' and some Bollywood, plus a documentary about the history of India.Sixties fans will understand the importance of Ravi Shankar's life and music to complete the picture. (The story takes place in 1972).

The book is in four parts and we are introduced to Malgudi, Narayan's fictional setting, right away. We also get to know the hero ,Raman, his occupation as a sign painter and his views on life in general, through his first busines deal with a newly qualified lawyer. Many cultural aspects of life in India are illustrated when the lawyer inaugurates his new business and Raman's name-plate is hung ceremoniously by his door.
