ORAL EXAMINATION ( 2e groupe)

 

                    Documents : ‘Liste des textes.’ + copies of all the texts. (One for the                                                                             examiner, one for you.)

 

                   Procedure: 1. The examiner chooses a document from the list.

                                            2. You have 20 minutes to prepare it.

 

                    Preparing the document: 

                                            a) Read and make NOTES of the main points.

                                            b) Make a PLAN.

                                            c) Prepare vocabulary and comments.

                  

                             3.      THE INTERVIEW.  

 

       a)   Greet the examiner (‘Good morning/afternoon.’ Do NOT say ‘ Mr , Mrs or Miss’)

             Offer to read the passage or part of it: ‘Shall I read the excerpt/article/passage… ?’

       b)   Present the document : NATURE, SOURCE, AUTHOR, DATE…

             DO NOT READ YOUR NOTES TOO MUCH , try to look at the examiner...

            ‘This is an excerpt from ‘The Great Gatsby’, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1926.’

            ‘This passage was written by………….. in ………..’

c)      Describe and comment on any peripheral documents (title, photographs, diagrams etc.)

‘The title is …………  ‘ which evokes the main character/ the key idea….’

‘The illustrations provide information about….’

‘The picture illustrates ………………’

d)      Define the topic.

               ‘This excerpt/ passage: is about ………

e)      Summarize the story or events + describe (briefly) the characters and places.

‘It happens in ……..(time, place)

The scene takes place in……….

The main character(s) is(are)….

It’s a story about……………….’

f)        Refer to or explain the writer’s technique, tone, and intentions.

                 ‘It’s a third person/ first person narrative…

We see the situation from the main character’s point of view…

According to the author .../ the writer implies that………

There is an element of suspense/ surprise/ mystery …………'

g)      React/personalize.

‘This passage makes me feel (sad, pessimistic/optimistic…)
